Why rant about the same things all the time?
I was posting on a comment over at Fanboy Rampage when it hit me that a lot of what is going on in the comic book industry is going on here in the blogosphere as well. Negative reactions to books, rants against creators, and anything provoking controversy seems to garner more reaction and comments than anything positive. Most topics that say, "hey this book is good", or are glowing (deservedly so) reviews don't get that many comments, at least from what I've seen. Good entertaining writing that helps "better comics" seems to be passed over for the next little bit of controversy or rumor. Sound familiar? In comics today a lot of entertaining thought provoking work seems to be passed over for the big crossover with the next big death or shocking event.
I'm not talking about criticism, criticism is a postive thing as it helps creators to realize their problems and better their work, I'm talking about negativity. There is a difference between pointing out the problems with a book and just trashing it. How do we end this cycle? How do we talk about these things without becoming the comics industry in microcosm? I try to focus on what I enjoy in comics instead of what I don't like or wish was done differently. It's up to everyone to find their own answer for this, but what I want to know is how the constant complaining about everything that you find bad about a comic, the industry, or how much you dislike "insert creator here" is actually helping things? Who are you helping? Is it just letting off steam? Do you need stress relief? Honestly, what's the point?
