How should I sell my old comic books?

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

I have 4 large boxes of comic books from the 1990s that I want to sell. How can I get the most value out of them? Should I sell them on eBay, to a comic store, or post an ad online or in the paper? Should I sell them individually, or in groups? Are the values listed in those comic book value guides accurate?

Ebay if you only have a few
If you have hundreds you should set up at comic book Show.
You can get the times and addresses off the inter net

My guess is that you probably have between $200.00 and $400 worth of comics (250 to a box) unless there are some special editions.
Sold in bulk you can get between .20 to.30 cents each. The smaller the lots you sell the more you can get out of each. Individually some of them could bring more than the list price.
Without knowing what books you have, and their condition all of the above is only random thinking or BS

Foot on the ladder of comedy in London?

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Can anyone recommend anywhere particularly good in London to start as a stand-up comic? Anything along the line of open-mic nights or comedy clubs that allow new acts to perform on certain nights. I'd love to try my hand at it but I've always been bamboozled as to how one goes about doing it.

The Improv Club has a new persons night. Check with them.

What’s the best place to find a comic book character’s bibliography?

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

I’m looking for lists of every comic The Joker, the Mad Hatter, Mr. Sinister, & Mystique have been in. The Joker will be the most difficult, what with all the crossovers & everything. Anyone know where I can find a GOOD list of even one of them?

Comicvine has most of them. Not sure how complete or accurate the lists are, but that should get you started.

Is it bad to listen to stand-up comedy before going to sleep?

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

I have trouble falling asleep sometimes. Recently I've gotten in the habit of listening to stand-up comedy as I lie in bed. On the one hand it seems that having something playing helps me fall asleep; on the other hand, I'm wondering if stand-up comedy is too energetic, and might keep me up longer. It's hard to tell on my own whether it helps or hurts. I remember reading about the effects of different media (books, music, TV) on falling asleep, and how each affected sleeping time; is anyone aware of research on this topic?

i actually researched this topic for my psych class..its an awesome subject…..i also had troubles sleeping at night. so knowing a lot of doctors of psych, i asked them. long story short it was because of the music i was listening to before i went to sleep. the normal body falls asleep in 7 minutes, thats under all the right condition, body temperature, blood pressure, being calm or stable and so on….if u are listening to comedians, its most likely is keeping you up because it stimulates the brain *laughter*….through research, the best way to fall asleep faster is to match the *right conditions* perhaps try listening to calming music or imagine yourself in the place you would most like to be…. …..tv /radio/ or books only matters on the person, since we are all so different, its also impossble to tell u reading puts you to sleep faster, cuz i know reading gets me worked up and would never put me to sleep..just focus on what calms you

Octopus Pie comic #121

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Read the comic at http://www.octopuspie.com
UPDATE - FAQ: The music track is “Atlas” by Battles. This footage is sped up from apprx. 4 hours (though along with brainstorming and initial thumbnails, it took closer to 6).

I’m drawing the strip in Manga Studio. This one’s a bit slower than my last video.

What is the largest licensed intercompany crossover comic?

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

I am curious to know of what is the largest crossover comic released to date. I am referring to LICENSED crossovers, just to let you know. I have one thing to ask, please try to find one that has more than three different series from three different companies, Like DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse.

This is sort of a non-answer, but I'd like to point out that the Wikipedia page for "intercompany crossover" already has a fairly extensive list. By "largest" I suppose you mean "involving the most characters" or "involving the most publishers"; the vast majority seem to be between no more than two companies, but it's hard to be sure since the list is by character and the corresponding owner is not indicated or immediately obvious.

How can Comedy Central, who is just a channel on cable, get away with playing movies uncensored?

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Besides the pay channels like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, etc…How can Comedy Central get away with it, yet, A&E chops up The Sopranos like meat, and don't get me started on the USA channels editing.

The answer is actually very simple. The censorship you are thinking about comes from the FCC that governs the public airwaves. Those are the traditional tv channels (2-13 plus the UHF channels). Cable is not subject to that censorship, premium channels or not. PBS is also not covered by FCC regulations because it's mostly supported by donations from the viewing public.

Now the question would be why has it taken so long for cable channels to be more provocative? The answer isn't the government, it's advertisers. Non-premium cable channels rely heavily on advertising to make their money and sustain themselves. When tv shows start airing things that some people find objectionable, those people contact the advertisers and organize boycotts. The advertisers then feel compelled to withdraw their support of the channel/program and that hurts the channel, so they need to be mindful of what the public and sponsors will allow moreso than the government.

That's not to say that the FCC hasn't considered and tried to regulate cable, but it doesn't at this point in time.

Now for the public airwave channels, like traditional networks, they have censors in place too to ensure again that sponsors are happy, the audience is happy and the government is happy.
