I recently watched Justice League Unlimited and really liked The Question in the way the he is portrayed in that cartoon. I picked up some Question comics because of this, but found that this wasn’t quite the same one that I liked. Can anyone recommend a comic book that uses either the same or at least a more similar version of the Question than found in the 80s stories?
The Justice League Unlimited version of the Question was more of a loner, dark, and conspiracy theorist. Although Rorschach was a homage to him, in JLU the Question is more like Rorschach. So unfortunately, this Question is only the JLU’s product.

I think they are kind of lame, because really it's just trying to get you to spend more $$ on the same comic with a different cover.
Also, when did this trend start? I don't remember seeing this in the 90s but then again I have never been a huge comic fan.
Bdig85 said it best…you as well. This "variant cover" trend has been around since the early- mid 90s it was worse back then. They had everything from foil covers to perforated covers. The trend sort of died out somewhat by the end of the 90s…at least the absurdity of the covers died out.
Today they're more sophisticated in trying to get us to spend more money…for the same book, by offering a cover that's been drawn by a kick ass artist..or putting the president of the united states on the cover. I don't' see this trend ever dying out as long as people continue to buy into it. We as collectors / fans just have to be smarter than the company.

While I know video games are doing well and movies are actually starting to hurt, what about comic books? And how bad will the economy hurt an entry-level artist in trying to get a job in comics?
It hurts bad.
Comic book fans tend to have low incomes, and view comic books as a luxury, so even slightest economic trouble causes them to buy less comic books.
You probably should start by setting up a webcomic, if it gets popular, you can use it as portfolio when you approach comic book publishers, and you can also use GoogleAds to make some money off your webpage. And of course you need to find a "day job" to pay your bills.
